Ricardo Lamas Likely Next For Featherweight Champion

Jose Aldo was initially resistent to the idea of fighting Anthony Pettis.

Pettis, who dropped from Lightweight to challenge Aldo, was seen by the Aldo camp as not being worthy of an immediate title shot. The title shot, according to the Aldo camp, should belong to Ricardo Lamas.

The UFC was able to persuade Jose Aldo to take the Pettis fight by promising him an immediate shot at the Lightweight title. Aldo agreed, and the Aldo/Pettis fight was set for UFC 163. Unfortunately for fight fans, that fight didn't end up happening, as Pettis was forced to withdraw due to injury.

So where does this leave Aldo now?

It's important to note a few things:

1) Jose Aldo broke his foot in the "Korean Zombie" fight and will likely be out of action for a while

2) Ricardo Lamas is a very worthy challenger at Featherweight

3) Aldo didn't end up fighting Pettis, so is the promise from the UFC to give Aldo an immediate Lightweight title shot still good?

Having said all of that, I believe that Aldo will remain at Featherweight for the time being, and I believe that his next fight will come against Ricardo Lamas. Following Lamas, your top contenders in the division are names like Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson - names that Aldo has already beaten.

It seems logical that Aldo would first fight Lamas and then make the move to 155, but we'll see what the UFC wants to do.
